Take Care of the Caregiver

  November marks National Family Caregivers Month, recognized each year to thank, support, educate, and empower family caregivers. It’s also a perfect time to highlight readily available resources to help caregivers be resourceful and in acquiring information and the help they need. The following resources can help family caregivers become advocates for themselves and their loved ones so they can make their lives more manageable. They can also help the caregiver rest and recharge. Take Care of the Caregiver National Family Caregivers Month reminds caregivers of the importance of taking care of themselves.  You deserve to take some time out for yourself. Stress can be detrimental to an otherwise healthy body, so spend some time focusing on you. If you can’t find a local support group, consider a web forum or message board. Also consider starting your own group. Laugh! Be happy! Journaling can be relaxing and cleansing. And if you’re inclined to share, your musings and experiences may just help others in the same boat. Accept and ask for help. Ask a trusted friend or family member to stay with your loved one for an hour or two or a day. Also consider a home health agency. Nurture your spirit with prayer, meditation or nature each day. Recognize your blessings. Exercise (play a round of golf), eat right, get enough sleep, treat yourself and cry if you need it.
