Extended Learning with Wesley U

Introducing Wesley Homes’ new continuing education program for older adults.

Wesley U is the new extended learning program for older adults offered by Wesley Homes Des Moines. The classes are low cost and open to all seniors whether they live at Wesley or not. The courses offered vary in topics and interests and are led by specialists and college instructors.

The program partners with various organizations depending on the subject matter. Highline School District often holds events, such as ballroom dancing classes hosted on the Des Moines campus. Wesley U also partners with the Alzhiemer’s Association and SeniorCorrespondent.com, a nonprofit that publishes articles written by seniors with a “seasoned view of the world”.

Wesley U is led by Wesley U Coordinator Leslie Lehnhoff, a certified clinical musician with a master’s in therapeutic music and bachelor’s in music performance. Leslie originally joined Wesley Homes for an internship in 2014. With teaching experience at Renton Technical College, she has led the extended learning program with great enthusiasm.

“We’re very excited with what Wesley U is going to provide this new year. We have already had great success with our winter classes, and people are eager for more!” said Leslie.

Along with the Wesley U classes Leslie, leads the Wesley Encores choir group, Music Memory and Movement class, and provides private piano lessons.

Wesley U, formerly Learning is ForEver (LIFE) classes, was rebranded to highlight its educational aspect, but the program still offers more than educational lectures. Wesley U is is not only beneficial for keeping the mind sharp but is a great way for people to stay socially engaged.

“Through our partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, we know that staying socially active can go a long way in helping to prevent memory loss. We also know the most enriching immediate benefit is the opportunity to try new things with others,” said Leslie.

There are new classes every quarter; participants can sign up at any time and can pick which classes they want to attend. Wesley U has a Facebook group where people can share photos and interesting articles as well as a page on wesleychoice-old.dcclients.com.
