Veterans Day is coming up, but how can we honor our veterans and those who are currently deployed? – Invite a veteran to Wesley Homes Des Moines to hear Joint Base Lewis-McCord’s 56th Army Band as they honor veterans with a performance on Friday, November 15th in Logan Hall at 2:00 p.m. – Welcome them when they return. Let them know you’re glad they’re home, and thank them for their service. – Spread your appreciation through social media. Reach out to those near and far with a “thank you” on Facebook, Twitter or your favorite social media site. If your grandparent is a veteran, include a photo. – Volunteer at your local veteran’s organization or hospital or volunteer your professional services. Offer free haircuts, financial advice or lap robes for injured vets. – Find out if there is something a local military family needs: groceries, blankets, babysitting, lawn care, diapers or household chores. – Offer to buy a veteran a cup of coffee or lunch or discreetly pay the tab. – Send out a care package to our service men and women. Include these types of items: soap, foot powder, deodorant, tissue, razors, baby wipes, lip balm, bug repellant, candy, beef/turkey jerky, ramen noodles, gum, protein bars, playing cards and board games. Be sure to include a heartfelt thank you letter or card. Get your family involved. Their sacrifice will be minor compared to a soldier’s, but it will make a big impact on both your family and a soldier. Tell us how you honor those who have served and those who are serving their country.
