Happy Retired Teacher

Marty has lived in the south King County area most of her life. She attended Highline Public Schools from grades one through 12 and held positions at Kent-Meridian, Selah, Sunnyside and Mt. Rainier high schools.

“I’ve lived in this area for a long time, so I wanted to stay in this community,” said Marty. “I already had friends who lived here before I moved to Wesley. Through them, I heard about their interesting programs and lectures. I thought, ‘There’s something going on there. Things are happening!’”

“I’d come here to play bridge with my friends,” she remembered, “but it was getting harder to go places. I had friends who’d drive me around, but they were getting older, too. It was time to make a decision about my future.”

Marty looked to Wesley Homes. “I was really impressed with their library, and I already had friends who lived here. It was an easy choice. Now I have other friends who really like coming here for the monthly Southwest King School Retirees Association (SWKSRA) Board meetings. We also have one program every year here for the entire association that the public is invited to attend. Wesley Homes has become a sort of focal point for us. My PEO group meets here, too, and even more of my teacher friends have moved here. My last three high school reunions have been here, and we’re planning to do it again this fall. I love that there’s so much space here for all of my activities and groups!”

Well-known in the field of education in Washington State, Marty holds a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Washington State University and a Master of Education in Counseling from the University of Washington. She has also volunteered for the AARP State Leadership Council, Washington State School Retirees Association as president, Southwest King School Retirees Association and Burien Group Health Council.

Marty suggests that all older adults plan in advance and make the move while they are able to make these decisions. “I made the decision even though my sons didn’t think it was time yet for me to move. Now they’re happy I downsized and made the move, and I’m happy I was able to give things to my grandchildren and see they were things they wanted.”
