Big Squash Ready for Fall

They resemble pumpkins, but they are big squashes!

Story by Pat King of The Grapevine

Des Moines residents Ed LaCrosse and Frank Needles like to show off their fifteen pound Boston squashes. The golden orange squash are from seeds from the Baker Creek Seed Heirloom Company.

Frank has been gardening since he planted his first black Hubbard squash when he was just four and a half years old. Ed, the former curator of the Healy Mansion and Garden in Auburn, has been a Master Gardener for 26 years.

Frank planted the seeds in May in the Wesley Homes Des Moines circle garden where residents and staff could watch them grow. Ed and Frank watered the squash daily in July and August in addition to the usual daily watering from Wesley’s groundskeepers.
